My 8 year old son loves to use the figures in this chess set outside of the chess game as the characters for the stories he makes up with them. They are well designed and look like the animated characters in the DS games about Mario, particularly the Bowser character. Using it as a chess set was a bit confusing for me to remember which character is what chess piece. The pieces are labeled, which helps, but I had to keep checking the label. Overall it is a nice set especially for Mario fans.

My 6 years old daughter is big fan of super Mario and she loved this game. She learned how to play chess in no time thanks to Mario characters.

This toy is super cool. I purchased it because my 2 boys (ages 6,3) are obsessed with Mario. I looked at the sets of action figures and they were so Expensive, this set has it all. I have been OCD about the kids keeping the parts together on this one. My 6 year old learned to play chess with this set overnight, he just loved the characters. I will give one warning, every single Male (my husband, brother, and Dad), was very bothered by Luigi being the Queen. I don't know why it got to them, but that's all they could talk about. Luigi is the Queen for Mario's side and Baby bowser is the Queen for Bowser's side. Although Princess Peach and Daisy are also pieces they are not the Queens. Anyway, enough with my crazy family. My kids love the set, and they like to play with the characters, and I would recommend this set to a anyone who has a Mario lover.

When I bought this game for my 8 tear old son's birthday, I had originally been looking for a Mario Bros. figurines set. I couldn't find anything close to what I wanted - the figurines were very small and the sets were very expensive. That's when I saw this chess set and I was impressed by the characters it included and the size of the pieces. I should also mention that my son HATES board games (much to my dismay!) - so I hesitated on giving him a chess board as a gift. BUT - it turned out to be his absolute favorite gift! He loves playing with the pieces - which are very durable, good sized, and have wonderful detail, and Mom likes that he's using his imagination. In addition, by the second day he had it, he was wanting to learn to play chess and has played every day since! This was worth every penny!!
